A BRIEF HISTORY AND HELPFUL CONTACT INFORMATION FOR ARMSTRONG, BRITISH COLUMBIA

The City of Armstrong is located on Highway #97A, 23 km north of Vernon and 15 km south of
Enderby. Armstrong is situated in the heart of the Spallumcheen Valley, in the Regional District of
North Okanagan.
Armstrong has an average January temperature of -3.3°C and an average July temperature of 20.6°C.
The average annual snowfall is 150 cm and the average annual rainfall is 358 mm.
The population of Armstrong numbers approximately 4,700.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY
In 1892 when the Shuswap/Okanagan railway was completed the stop at Armstrong consisted of a lone
boxcar serving as a station. The city was named after William Heaton-Armstrong, a private banker who
sold bonds for the railway. Armstrong was incorporated into city status in March 1913.
Today, the economy of Armstrong is based on commercial and industrial businesses, but is mainly
supported by agriculture. The products of the surrounding District of Spallumcheen, many of which,
(Armstrong cheddar cheese, a regional specialty, green alfalfa and golden wheat) are shipped throughout
the world.

ATTRACTIONS
The Interior Provincial Exhibition – This popular community event is held annually on the long weekend
in September. Festivities include agricultural displays, competitions and a midway.
Village Cheese Company – The company offers tours of their award winning cheese and ice cream
factory.
Armstrong and Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery – Exhibits trace the history of Armstrong and the
surrounding area. The Art Gallery is home to permanent and visiting exhibits from local and regional
artists.
Farmers Market – Held from April to October, on Saturdays from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, at the Fair
Grounds. Vendors include fresh produce, baked goods and crafts.
Memorial Park – This popular community park offers an outdoor swimming pool, playground, manicured
flower beds and a picnic area.
