A BRIEF HISTORY AND HELPFUL CONTACT INFORMATION KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA

The City of Kelowna is situated on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake, in the Okanagan Valley.
Kelowna is located on Highway #97, midway between the cities of Penticton on the south and Vernon to
the north, 150 km north of the United States border.
The climate of Kelowna is mild, with long sunny summers and comparatively short winters. The
average temperature in January is –3.8oC and the average temperature in July is 19.5oC. The average
annual rainfall is 280.7 mm with an average annual snowfall of 101.8 cm. The average annual amount of
sunshine is 2000 hours. Due to the mild dry climate, many people who suffer from arthritis, asthma and
other respiratory ailments find relief here.
The population of Kelowna numbers approximately 120,812.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY
The city was incorporated in 1905. The name Kelowna is a corruption of the native word meaning
“Grizzly Bear”. The history of the area involving European settlement began with the fur brigades in the
early 19th century. Father Pandosy of the Oblate Order established a mission near the city in 1858. The
apple trees he planted flourished, illustrating the fertility and potential of the area; in 1892 the first
commercial orchards were planted and today Kelowna is the focal point of the largest fruit growing
district in Canada. One-third of all apple shipments in Canada emanates from this city, thereby deriving
the nickname “Canada’s Apple Capital”.
Today, Kelowna is the marketing and distribution centre of the fabulous Okanagan Valley. The city and
surrounding area is the centre for a very large fruit tree industry, including grapes for the numerous
world-renowned wineries. Lumbering is a key industry, with a number of new plants being established
recently.

ATTRACTIONS
Kelowna is rich in history and cultural development, including art, with the Kelowna Art Gallery and
Kelowna Museum. The Kelowna Community Theatre offers music and live theatre.
Kelowna Farmer’s and Crafter’s Market – This farmers market is open April to October, on Saturday and
Wednesdays, from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. Local produce, fruit, baked goods crafts and fresh cut flowers are
available at over 100 vendors.

Annual Festivals – Kelowna is host to numerous annual events including the Kelowna SnowFest in
January, Canada Day Celebration and the Music and Arts Festival in July, Dragon Boat Festival in
September and the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival in October.

Beaches – Kelowna is homes to nine beaches, all located along the shore of the Okanagan Lake.
Kerry Park – Situated in the heart of downtown Kelowna, this community park offers a waterfront
walkway and is host to live music during July and August.
City Park – This popular park offers a sandy beach, running track, waterpark and picnic areas.
