A BRIEF HISTORY OF PENTICTON, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The City of Penticton is nestled between the Okanagan and Skaha Lakes in the Okanagan Valley in south
central British Columbia. Penticton is located on Highway #97, approximately 380 km east of
Vancouver and 40 km south of Kelowna.
The weather in Penticton is wonderful year-round, with a semi arid desert climate. The average winter
temperature is -2°C and the average summer temperature is 20°C. The total hours of sunshine per year
are 2,032 hours. The area has an average annual rainfall of 250 mm and an average annual snowfall of
73 cm.
The population of Penticton numbers approximately 37,721.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY
Penticton was incorporated in 1948. The First Nation tribes originally called it “Phthauntac” (the ideal
meeting place), but later changed it to “Pen-tah-tim” (a place to live forever). One of the first visitors to
the area was in 1811 by Scotsman David Stuart (fur trader and author), who wrote several books about
the area.
The area was first settled in 1860 and the first orchards began to appear in the early 1890s. In 1905 the
Southern Okanagan Land Co. began to provide irrigation to the area.
Transportation via rail had been in place since 1892, but the area began to flourish when the Kettle
Valley Railway linked the town to Crowsnest Pass and Hope by 1915.
Today, Penticton is a regional service centre for the area. The economy is based on three main areas,
manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. With the mild climate in Penticton, tree fruit and vegetables are
important elements in the agriculture aspect, along with forestry. Grape growing is becoming very
popular as the wine industry continues to flourish. Penticton is also a well known four-season tourist
destination.

ATTRACTIONS
Annual Events – Penticton is host to numerous annual festivals including the Canada Day Celebrations in
July, the Penticton Highland Games in June, the Peach Festival in August, the Santa Claus Parade in
December and the Okanagan Wine Festivals held in April and October.
Penticton Art Gallery – This cedar structures on the shore of Lake Okanagan houses art from regional,
provincial and national levels.
Farmers Market – The Market is held during the months of May to October, on Saturdays from 8:30 am –
12:00 pm. Vendors include fresh produce, honey, eggs and baked goods.

ATTRACTIONS (CONT)
Penticton Museum and Archives – Displays, exhibits and artifacts tracing the history of and honouring
the First Nations people, pioneers, gold seekers and railway men.
Kettle Valley Railways Trail – Part of the Trans Canada Trail, this 500 km stretch of a former railway
line is ideal for hiking and biking. The trail travels through orchards, vineyards, with spectacular views
of the lakes.
