A Brief history of SECHELT, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The District Municipality of Sechelt, which is part of the Sunshine Coast Regional District, is centrally
situated on the Sunshine Coast. Sechelt is on the shoreline of Sechelt Inlet, in the Strait of Georgia. The
community is located approximately 50 km northwest of Vancouver, along Highway #101
The population of the District Municipality of Sechelt numbers approximately 8,454.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY
The name Sechelt derives from the First Nations people the “Shishalh” whom had a population of
26,000, when the first Europeans arrived to this area. The name Sechelt means land between two waters.
Today, the Sunshine Coast is known for its beautiful landscape; ideal for cyclists and canoeists who love
to explore this picturesque area. Sechelt is the natural hub for business, culture and tourism for the
Sunshine Coast.

ATTRACTIONS
Annual Events – Sechelt is host to numerous annual events including the Canada Day Parade, Sechelt
Family Arts Festival in July, the Sunshine Coast Country Music Festival, the Festival of the Written Arts
in August and the Polar Bear swim on New Year’s Day.
Hackett Park – Located in the centre of Sechelt, the park offers a picnic area, playground, ball diamonds
and tennis courts.
