Smithers was founded in 1913 as the Divisional Headquarters for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, now

Chairman of the Board of the Grand Trunk Pacific. The original survey of the townsite was completed

minor changes, is the one currently used by the town.
On October 12, 1921, Smithers had the distinction of becoming the first incorporated village in the
Province. On January 1, 1967, Smithers’ status was changed to that of a Town.
Today, Smithers is the regional service centre for the Bulkley Valley area. The town also serves as a
distribution centre for the lumber, mining, agricultural and transportation industries in the area. The
town is being increasingly recognized as the supply centre for a large proportion of west-central British
