How to Prevent Hitching Cockroaches During your Vancouver Move

Prevent Bringing Cockroaches with you During your Move to Vancouver

Moving out of a pest-infested house? Cockroaches, spiders, ants, bed bugs and termites are some of the most common kinds of pest infestations in the Metro Vancouver area. A major concern most movers in Vancouver have is how to absolutely ensure that these critters do not move with them to their new home. As one of the most experienced moving companies in Vancouver, we will cover one of the most common types of infestations and how we can leave them behind for good.

Why do we hate cockroaches?

Besides their creepy appearance, cockroaches are most despised because they can cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks, especially with young children. Cockroaches are also able to carry around 30 kinds of bacteria, some of which include E. coli and Salmonella.

Cockroaches spread quickly for a couple of reasons. Females only need to be impregnated once to be able to lay egg capsules for the rest of her life. Egg capsules can hold 40 eggs at one time.

What to do before your move in the Vancouver area

It is good to spray pesticides in your old home prior to packing to kill any existing bugs. However, what many do not realize is that pesticides do not kill egg capsules. What we must be careful with when we are moving is that we do not transport these egg capsules. The good news is that cockroach egg capsules are about 30-40 centimeters long and can be seen with the naked eye. This means that as you are packing, you will be able to check for egg capsules and get rid of them as much as possible.

Tips for cleaning your infested belongings

As with every move, and more importantly when moving from an infested house in Vancouver, it is a good idea to clean everything.

Launder your clothes, linens, and bags, and place them in the dryer in the highest temperature the fabric can take. Once this is completed, place them in a bag and properly seal it. If at all possible, pack and store them away from the infested house as soon as possible.

It is difficult to clean inside electrical appliances. Computers, toasters, microwaves, TVs, cable boxes and DVD players are just some examples of where cockroach egg capsules can hide. Check thoroughly and vacuum all the crevices as much as you can.

Check your suitcases, bags, backpacks, and storage boxes that you will use for the move. Pockets on duffle bags and suitcases are often missed. If you are preparing your move in a hot summer month, you can place these in a large plastic bag and leave them under the sun for a few hours to kill any hatchlings inside.

What to do after your move

The fact is, however, that you cannot be absolutely sure you will not take any egg capsules with you to your new home when you move. It is best to use Combat or Maxforce bait gelin the new house to ensure you get rid of any egg capsules that you have accidently brought with you to the new place. The bait will attract roaches, allow them to take poison back to their nest and infect other roaches, killing them at the source. Eggs take about 30 days to hatch, so leaving the bait products there for two to three months will ensure all the eggs you have brought with you would have hatched, been poisoned, and finally killed.
