Located just across the river from Surrey and sandwiched in between Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, it’s the perfect place for family living, and not just because of the cheaper real estate! It’s actually quite large

One thing to know about Coquitlam is that even though it’s a suburb of Vancouver, it’s bigger than you might expect. In fact, it actually has a wider area than Vancouver itself, and it is the 6^th largest city population-wise in British Columbia. Because Coquitlam is fairly spread out, it can take 20 minutes to get from one end to the other, and that’s without traffic. Compared to some of the other suburbs in the area, that’s actually quite a while for travelling within a city.

Coquitlam might be big, but that’s because it has everything!

Since it is actually the 6^th largest city in BC, Coquitlam is filled with many amenities and activities for everyone. It has its own mall, Coquitlam Centre, which is centrally located within the city. Nearby are many important government buildings and the main library, as well as an aquatic centre and many other stores.

Besides the busyness of the city’s center, there are also many places to relax or spend time outside when you move to Coquitlam. There are a few small lakes that are perfect for a walk or run, such as Lafarge Lake or Como Lake. Coquitlam is also a popular golfing area, and is the home of the Vancouver Golf Club as well as several other courses. Town Centre is a large sports and recreational center, that is at the heart of all sports activities that go on in Coquitlam, no matter what game you play. Nearby is the Evergreen Cultural Centre, which has many indoor activities and programs that might interest you, from choirs to drama camps, to watching concerts and performances.

What the city doesn’t have, it has very nearby!

Coquitlam is very close to Belcarra, where you can find several beaches to relax at, or hike around the trails on the lakes. Rocky Point, on the Burrard Inlet, is also nearby and is perfect for a family picnic or a day in the sun. Also, Coquitlam is soon to be connected even more easily to the rest of Vancouver by the Evergreen Line, an extension of the Skytrain. This line will be connecting Coquitlam Centre to the Millenium Line of the Skytrain and make Vancouver even more accessible to Coquitlam residents. On top of this, the new Port Mann Bridge is also improving traffic conditions between Coquitlam and Surrey, with two lanes dedicated to local traffic between the two cities.

Let it snow in Coquitlam!

One last tidbit of information you may want to know before moving to Coquitlam is that you should expect a lot of snow! Snow levels compared to other parts of the lower mainland can be a bit higher since Coquitlam has a higher elevation, so if it’s a snowy winter, be prepared and expect some snow days!
