Moving in Vancouver Can be Expensive

Moving in Vancouver Tips: How to Find and Identify Valuable Collector’s Items for Some Cash

Moving can be a daunting experience. All the cleaning, organizing, packing, and repacking can be a hassle. Included in the packing experience is the ‘privilege’ of purging and getting rid of items we don’t need but have been keeping around for years.

Good news though, the hassle-free way to purge is to throw away or give away everything we no longer want to keep. But – and this is important – there may be items we already possess that, although no have longer of value to you, are prized by collectors who would pay to get them off your hands. If you can find and identify these items, you may be able to authenticate and sell them for some extra cash!

Sell Old Items

Your parents, grandparents, or great grandparents may have left you some old junk. To start, you should look for the most common types of items that may be worth some money. These include old comics, baseball cards, hockey cards, old stamps, coins, and art collections.

Next, we need to actually find out if they are worth anything. There are multiple ways to go about doing this. Because many appraisal services (i.e. services that verify whether something is authentic and how much they are worth) are not free, it is probably best to do the initial investigation ourselves.

Stamps

If you are collecting stamps, there are certain conditions that will rule out the value of a collection right away. Stamps that are loose and not in a collected set are usually worth very little. Stamps that are produced within the last 70 years are worth nothing. Older stamps are worth more, and so are stamps that are in mint condition. For more detailed research, consult a printed reference such as Richard John Sutton’s “Stamp Collector’s Encyclopedia,” which is likely available in your local library.

Coins

If you find a collection of coins, you can also look up their value on the internet. Start by searching the denomination of the coin, origin of the coin, and the year it is produced. There are many websites that provide information on how much a coin is worth. There is also a printed reference that you can consult with at the local library: “The Standard Catalog of World Coins” by Krause Publication.

After having some idea that your coins or stamps are worth some money and you would want to sell them, it is a good idea to stop by a local collector’s establishment and get a proper appraisal.

Another large collecting business is with sports cards. Much like researching the value of a coin, find out how much they are worth by searching up the sport, the name of the player, the year, and the team they were playing for. It is also a good idea to go onto eBay or similar websites to see if others are selling the same cards. This will give you an indication of whether or not you would like to have the cards graded and encapsulated professionally. After that you can find out how much they are worth from a sports card authority.
